It's two in the morning, the music's cranking, you and everybody else around you are either drunk or high or both, if not because you've been doing shots at the bar or smoking in the bathrooms, then because the atomsphere's so pumping that you feel good just being here.

In the middle of everything is Lucifer, orchestrating the chaos at the center of the party and completely in his element.

And he's waving you over.

Yeah, I am.

[ She studies him for a moment, as if considering how to say something. ]

This... gift. I've realized something. It's not just for you. It goes both ways. I get to see how wonderful you are. How good you are for me. And I wouldn't trade that for anything.

[lightsthesun]

[He squints at her, like he's desperately trying to see things from her point of view and... not quite getting it.] ... So, you're as lucky to have me as I am to have you? I'm not sure I'd agree with you there, Detective - [From where he's standing, she's definitely the one getting the raw end of this deal but he's not about to complain.] - but you have no idea how delighted I am to hear you say it. You're incredible.

[detectivemiracle]

[ Chloe raises her chin, amused and slightly defiant. ] I'm in love with a great guy, who knows me almost better than I know myself sometimes, who respects me personally and professionally, who always has my back, always tells me the truth, makes me laugh and tells me I'm incredible. Yeah, I'm lucky to have you. As a partner, as a friend, as a boyfriend. You've always been worth it.

[lightsthesun]

Detective, honestly. You're making me blush. [She really is. He's only thankful the lighting's as forgiving as it is because there's no hiding the delighted flush creeping up his neck, reddening his ears.]

[detectivemiracle]

Hmm. And I can make the Devil blush. That's pretty cool, too.

[ She looks very pleased with herself about that. Even leans in to kiss him again. ]

And we're definitely keeping that one a secret. Strictly between us. [Especially given that Lucifer probably wouldn't think twice about parading through the precinct in just his birthday suit with everything on show. He's never really thought of himself as being shy before but Chloe seems to have a way of bringing things out in him even he didn't realise were there.]

[detectivemiracle]

I'm not gonna put it on a billboard.

[ She smirks faintly. ] Buuuuuut there might be a few people I mention it to.

[lightsthesun]

[He drops his head to her shoulder with a thunk, groaning.] Ugh, not Maze. Anything but that.

[detectivemiracle]

Mm, I was more thinking of Ella.

[ Chloe smiles, knowing Ella will just eat up any and all romantic details she provides. ]

Oh, and Trixie.

[lightsthesun]

Fine but just know that if you bring Ms. Lopez into this then she's going to be making eyes at the both of us, not just me, so on your head be it.

And, bonus! She still doesn't believe that I'm the real me - [Though the furtive looks Dan's been shooting him from across the bullpen haven't gone unnoticed. She knows something's up, just isn't entirely sure what.] - so I won't even need to hand over my Devil-card when you tell her.

[Trixie's just a lost cause at this point. He doubts he could frighten her even if he tried.]

[detectivemiracle]

Mm.

[ Chloe gives him a Look - like, well, like she's about to say something she knows he won't like hearing. ]

Maybe we should be thinking about, you know. Showing Ella. Before she finds out some other way. [ She says that last bit more quickly, to make sure he can't interject first. ]

[lightsthesun]

[He laughs like she's just said the punchline of an amazing joke.] Ha! Yes, anything that'll put a stop to that bloody method actor schtick. What'll I show her first, my face or my wings? Oh, I know! Quick trip down to Hell, give her the tour. I mean, she's never likely to end up there so no harm in giving her a peek.

[Wait, but Chloe isn't laughing. Why isn't she laughing!?] ... You're not serious?

[detectivemiracle]

Little bit serious.

[ She kisses his cheek. ] I think it's safe to say she's going to find out, sooner or later, one way or another. Better to control the narrative, hm? [ She can't help but think, if they'd just told Dan, if they'd done it before Michael could show up and manipulate him, well. It might not've gone so badly. ]

Except my pesky invulnerability problem's no longer a factor so I think I'd rather just take my lumps if and when the time comes, thanks. [That's a car crash of a conversation he fully intends on avoiding for as long as Devilishly possible.] Ignorance is bliss, after all, and after everything's that happened I think Ms. Lopez deserves a break.

As in not have her whole belief system come crashing down around her.

[detectivemiracle]

I think you don't give her enough credit.

[ The music is picking up again, reminding her of just where they are, and she nods in the direction of the elevator. ]

Wanna take this upstairs? [ She leans in, kisses his neck. ]

I think I'm all too aware of how everyone I know's reacted to the news so far and I'd prefer to avoid a repeat performance where possible. [The attempts on his life are getting tiresome, frankly.] And I think she's going to be screwed up enough without my help.

[He's already guiding her back through the crowd as he's talking, a hand placed gently against the small of her back to steer her in the right direction.]

[detectivemiracle]

[ Her own arm slides around his waist, and she doesn't respond to him until they reach the elevator, the doors closing on the busy nightclub floor and finally giving them some privacy. ]

I think the person who handled it the best got to see the proof from you, in controlled circumstances, after asking for it.

[ She's referring, of course, to Linda. ]

And - [ She swallows, glancing up at the ceiling of the elevator as it climbs by way of avoiding his gaze. ] - speaking as one of the people who didn't handle it well, I would've preferred the more controlled situation.

Would you? [The question's practically dripping with skepticism as Lucifer casts a look over at her, eyebrow raised.] So, it wasn't the fact that I'm the Devil that had you running for the hills, it was because you weren't adequately prepared? I should've done more to get you used to the idea by, oh, I don't know, telling you I was the Devil from the very first day we met?

Forgive me, Detective, but I very much doubt a pep talk beforehand would help anyone, least of all Ms. Lopez. She's Catholic for one thing and that never bodes well.

[detectivemiracle]

[ She can't help but flinch a little at his words, his tone. Not out of fear, but shame. It's a sore spot for him, and it is for her, too. Why she's suddenly poking at it, she doesn't know, but now she's here, she feels like she needs to plow through it.

The elevator finally reaches the penthouse, and she steps away from him, striding in to the bar to pour herself a drink from whatever's decanted - probably scotch. ]

I don't know. [ She says that quietly, but honestly. ] If I'd known that Linda knew? Maybe... maybe I would've made different choices. I felt alone.

But... Ella wouldn't be alone, if we chose to show her. You wouldn't be alone, either. Me, Linda, Amenadiel - we could all be there, for both of you. She's the one who reminded me, you know - that you're an angel. That you didn't start out bad, if you ever were. She always sees the best in everyone, even the Devil. And if she has her friends there, to make sure she knows it's okay? Well, that'd be a lot better than letting Michael get his manipulative claws into her, don't you think?

[lightsthesun]

[He's slower to follow after her, hesitating as he spots her expression and suddenly realises that he's wounded her without meaning to.] No, that came out wrong. I just meant - [The doors start to close and Lucifer has to throw out a hand to stop them, the mechanism juddering to a halt as he hauls the doors back without even thinking, finally striding after her and hurrying to correct himself.] I don't think now's the time. And the way you reacted -- Alright, it wasn't ideal but it's understandable and it proves my point. You can't prepare someone for something like this.

I mean, what do you suggest we do? Let her tie me up to give her the illusion of safety and negotiate a safeword? Under literally any other circumstances I'd be all for it.

[detectivemiracle]

[ Chloe just... takes a drink. And another. This was definitely not in her plans for the evening when she decided to come over, but this is what's happening. ] You're right. There isn't a good way, or a good time. There just isn't. It's big, and scary, and yeah, kind of crazy-making. [ She says this in the resigned tone of someone who knows from hard, painful experience. ]

But she's going to find out. One way or another, she's going to find out. And there are definitely things we can do to help mitigate the shock of it. For both of you. And... Lucifer. She deserves to know. As much as I do, or Linda does. She deserves to be able to make the choice, of knowing what you are and whether to keep you in her life, like we did. It's a risk, I know it is. But I don't think she'll make a different choice from me and Linda. [ By the time she's finished this speech, she's trying to catch his gaze again, affection in her eyes. ]

[lightsthesun]

Yes, but you don't know that. [If he's learned anything about humans since being on Earth it's that they're frustratingly unpredictable.] This could be the thing that tips her over the edge and I don't want to be a part of it.

[He can't. He had to endure Chloe running away from him for weeks on end and now Dan's avoiding being alone in a room with him whenever possible - to which Lucifer's responded by deliberately skulking around in dark corners just to freak him out as a sort of childish retribution for Dan's ridiculous behavior - so, no, he's not exactly jumping at the chance to expose himself like that again.] But if you're so gung-ho about keeping Ms. Lopez in the loop and possibly melting her brain then don't let me stop you, Detective. She might even be inclined to believe it if she heard it from you.

So. [This is definitely not the turn he'd expected the evening to take either so he's just going to help himself to a glass as well, clinking it against hers before knocking it back.] Consider this me giving you my blessing.

[detectivemiracle]

[ Lucifer is the one who's scared, really. Terrified. Of rejection. It's obvious to Chloe, of course - he's been rejected so much, by so many people who should've accepted him - herself included, to some extent. She's not absolved of blame there. He barely understands anything else. She can't imagine Ella would reject him like that - but he can, because that's almost all he knows.

She sighs, takes his wrist with her free hand, rubs circles into his skin. ]

Fine. I'll talk to Linda about it. If she agrees with me - [ that Ella should know - and Chloe is pretty sure Linda will agree with her - ] we can persuade Amenadiel to show her.

[lightsthesun]

[This is worse.] Wait, what? You're actually going to go through with it? [Okay, how exactly has this managed to blow up in his face so spectacularly? She wasn't supposed to call his bluff, dammit.] Alright, no, I've changed my mind. Offer rescinded.

[He's not panicking, you're panicking.] This is why the Devil doesn't go around handing out blessings, it all goes tits up sooner or later. This was quick though, even for me. [Even the hand she lays over his wrist isn't helping and, pouring his glass full to the brim, he steps away, loftily exiting out of this conversation as he heads for his bedroom in a hurry.]

[detectivemiracle]

[ Chloe does have a good poker face when she wants to. She lets him go, following leisurely behind him, up the steps, leaning a shoulder casually against the wall to watch him. ]

I don't want the decision taken out of your hands. Or hers. That's kind of my whole point, here.
